紀元前5世紀、ギリシャの哲学者エンペドクレスは「万物は不可分の4つの根（リゾマータ）から出来ている。」と説きました。
賢人として名高いエンペドクレスの「4大元素説」（４大元素：火・水・土・風）は、19世紀に近代科学の父ジョン・ドルトンによって「原子論」が世に出るまで多くの人々に信じられていました。
現代の私たちからすれば、「4大元素説」は無知な時代の常識と映りますが、再現性の検証と言う価値観や、適切な観測装置や計測機器が無い時代では、賢人として名高い人物の言葉を人々は安易に信じたと言うことなのです。
再現性実証が可能であれば、信じ難い事柄でもそこに未知の科学的事実が隠されているはずです。
